Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a young girl, she struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered from anxiety due to the word"association. Ford began to be attracted to acting when she was a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few weeks, she realized Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place suitable for her. Ford later applied to be a student for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among Ford's classmates. Ford received her degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode in the year 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy style, which she began adding to her show in 1996, quickly gained the attention of her peers.
